…and His incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is like the working of His mighty strength,
I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which He has called you, the riches of His glorious inheritance in the saints, and His incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is like the working of His mighty strength, which He exerted in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every title that can be given, not only in the present age but also in the one to come.
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In His great mercy He has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade-- kept in heaven for you, who through faith are shielded by God's power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.
In what ways is this incomparably great power for us who believe displayed?
Firstly, I have already noted that it’s displayed in giving spiritual life to our mortal bodies. For we were once dead in our sins and transgressions but God in love made us alive with Christ. I need not press further in this point but I do leave it for your meditation.
Secondly, this power is displayed in the keeping of our souls in this life. This power enables us to live for God, helping us to overcome the corruption that is in this world. It enables us to say "No" to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age. This power is truly displayed in God’s grace that keeps our souls looking unto Jesus. In keeping our souls, it also helps us stand under every pressure mounted by temptations and hence overcoming them. This power is seen in enabling us become faithful witnesses of Christ Jesus.
Thirdly, this power will be displayed in the changing of our bodies at the last trumpet. For we will not all sleep (that is, physically die), but we will all be changed. Therefore this power will be displayed in the resurrection of the dead and at large in the changing of all where the perishable will be clothed with imperishable, and the mortal with immortality. However, that power is already at work within us in that it gives us hope of eternal life in Christ Jesus. In faith we look forward to be with the Lord forever, yet we are still with him now as we live.
REFLECT
Do you see this incomparably great power at work in you? Or are you yet an unbeliever?
This power is for those who believe. Those who have put their trust in the Lord Jesus Christ. Those who are “divorced” from their sins and are “married” to Christ Jesus. This power is ours only through Christ Jesus.
